Ding… Dong…
Whoever decided to interrupt breakfast was in for an earful. Not from me, but Alice was likely to kill someone...
"You moron!" *Thwack*
Apparently I wasn't safe either.
"Ow! What was that for?"
You tell me! There’s a bunch of camera’s at the door, and I can only assume they’re here for you.
What? Why?
Thwack!
OW! What was that for?
For being a moron!
Sir Cunningham took a sip from his tea before chiming in.
Ah, right, I must have forgotten to tell you. They called a couple of days ago, said they wanted to follow you around for a day. One of those ‘day in the life’ things, sounded like fun, so I accepted on your behalf.
The doorbell rang once again as Alice and I stopped our spat as we stared incredulously at that damn smirk on the face of Nigel.
Well, don’t keep them waiting.
But today’s when I’m supposed to…
Indeed, should be a good chance to increase to look good in front of the cameras. Now if you won’t get the door, I’ll do it myself.
With that, he left his seat and tucked the newspaper he had been reading under his arm. He brushed us to either side as he walked between us towards the door. I followed him as the doorbell rang again. Sir Cunningham opened the door and greeted Tasha Jordan.
Ah, you’re here, wonderful, wonderful. Sorry about keeping you, come in come in.
Oh, no trouble at all sir, thank you for letting us do this. It means a lot that we can get this footage.
Not at all, not at all… why I remember back in ’82, that was Worcestershire I believe…
While standing back and letting Sir Cunningham’s story take up half of the day would have been a fine way to get out of doing this, I personally didn’t think I could take it. So I interjected.
As wonderful a story that is, don’t you have that meeting to get to?
Hmm? Ah… yes… yes, that’s right, the Global Wrestling Society is having a rules meeting. Very important, very important… We’re going to go over the rulebook and alter it if needed.
Wrestling has a rulebook?
Of course it does, I helped write it. It wasn’t always like that… why… I remember in Prague, 1980, we had to...
Alice came to the rescue and pulled Sir Cunningham out of the way of Tasha and the cameramen.
Come on dad, we’ve got to go. Los Angeles is a long trip.
Alice had said she didn’t want to go with her Father, but we all knew she had wanted to go shopping in Los Angeles, Annie said she hadn’t taken a day out since she had arrived. So, despite Alice’s stout refusals, I had offered to take Annie out for the day, so that Nigel and Alice could head off to their business in Los Angeles. Of course, now that Tasha had been sent to follow me around, things were a little more complicated. Hopefully the plans Annie and I had wouldn’t be totally screwed up.
Tasha gestured at Alice.
Your Girlfriend?
NO !!
Tasha shrugged and sat down at the table as Alice and Nigel headed out the door. Alice of course, left while telling me a bunch of rules and such, most of which I knew we were likely to break anyways. Tasha looked over to me.
So, you’ve got to put up with us following you around for a day. What’s it going to be? The Gym? Practice arena?
It was at that moment Annie came running down from upstairs, she had been getting dressed during the arrival of the camera crew. She glanced at the guys setting up a boom-mic confused, then walked up to me.
What’s going on?
I looked from her to Tasha, then back to Annie.
We’re going shopping. Then we might see a movie. They’re coming with us. That’s alright with you isn’t it?
Annie shrugged, then ran off to grab her handbag while I did my best to get the crew out to the house and into the Ford so we could head out.
As we were driving towards the shopping mall, Tasha began talking.
So, why isn’t Annie in school today?
Oh, she’s home-schooled. Alice and I are both college grads in two completely different fields of study, so we sort of work together to make sure she learns. See, watch…
I called back to Annie…
Hey, Annie, where’s Luxembourg?
Europe
Guatemala?
North America
Indonesia?
Oceana
Singapore?
Where?
Atta girl. A+.
Well, I guess on that note, now is a fine time to ask how you plan on preparing for your match with Taufik tomorrow night?
Preparing? For a match against Taufik? Look, I’m all for not underestimating my opponent and all, but this is how I’m preparing… I’m going to enjoy myself today, do my regular workout tonight, get a good night sleep, and not stress about fighting Taufik. Not trying to take anything away from him, he’s got a lot of heart, and he’s clever, but all I’m going to do by worrying about it is let him get in my head, and honestly, there’s no reason for letting him get away with it… he’s not particularly good at it.
So, you don’t think Taufik is a threat?
Taufik gets too emotional. He has a hard time focusing on, well, wrestling. All this anti-Americanism, this misogamy, this Jihad by the sword garbage… whatever floats his boat, but it’s a distraction. I’m here to show kids you can come from anywhere, be anybody, no matter what, you can become the best in the world by working hard and not letting haters like Taufik hold you down. Although… the thought of Taufik even trying to hold me down is laughable anyways. He’s kind of… you know… short. And weak. And thinks people actually have respect for him. Like somehow Drake Hunter sending a tweet my way is a public backing of Taufik.
Let me explain Drake Hunter for a second… if smashing my skull in with a chair somehow helps Drake Hunter, then I’d better watch out for Drake Hunter, if smashing Taufiks skull in with a chair helps Drake Hunter, guess who won’t give a second thought to leaving Taufik a bloody mess in the ring. If Taufik thinks he has a friend in Drake Hunter, he’s about to get a hell of a surprise the next time Drake gets his hands on a chair.
Taufik has no friends, he has no respect. The only person who follows him around is Jamal and that’s only because Jamal isn’t good enough to be a wrestler anyways. I think that was made pretty clear given his performance in Step Up!, which remember, I was only a part of because of a man named Bill Adams and some superdickery.
I think that fact is well documented.
I could say a lot more about Drake Hunter, but I won’t, because I’m not fighting Drake Hunter this week. I’m fighting Taufik. And I’ll leave it with this about Taufik. I admire where Taufik came from, what Taufik had to fight through to get where he is now… but the fact is, I had to fight through all of it myself. I had to learn a new language, deal with all of the people you have to deal with, to get to one of the fastest rising wrestling promotions in the world. One of the best. Melenium Pro Wrestling is the justification for everything I’ve done in the past. I’m here, and that means I’ve succeeded in all of my dreams as a child. And when you’ve succeeded, you don’t lose to someone like Taufik.
I pulled up to our first stop. A movie theater. I had thought about it a bit and realized this was Annie and my chance to spend the day together. I really didn’t want to have a camera drawing attention to us. Besides, what better way to spend time with my quasi-adopted little sis than a matinee?
We headed to the theater and I turned around and wagged my finger in Tasha’s face.
Ah, sorry, no camera’s in the theater. Guess you guys can’t come in. Too bad. Wreck it Ralph is supposed to be good. Um.. you know what, you got some good footage right? Yeah, go with that. See you all tomorrow!
I left them at the door, and the beaming face of Annie broke into an uncontrollable fit of giggles, one I couldn’t help but join her in. It would hopefully be the start of a good day.
