[Portland Maine, Friday December 7th, 3:43pm, the scene opens to see Shaun Cross walking down the cobblestone streets of the Old Port District. 19th century brick buildings and fishing piers surround him. It's a dreary and rainy day. Cross is wearing a hoodie, his hands in the pockets. Not many people are out and about on a day like this, however on occasion, a few people do pass by every now and again. Cross walks for a while before beginning to speak...]
"Home...I'm finally home after a bit less than stellar debut in Millennium Pro Wrestling...Was I pissed that I lost? No, not necessarily I wasn't. I mean, my debut, a losing effort against someone who'd been in the company for a while? I really don't have a right to get pissed over that. Was I upset that I didn't have as great of a match as I could have? Most certainly I was. Though I was wicked excited to hear that I'm booked for this Thursday's TNT in Salt Lake City. A Four Way Dance with Dynamo Crunch, Jimmy Fatal, and Nathan Styles? Sounds like fun..."
[Cross walks to the end of one of the piers and looks out over the ocean into the fog. He sighs]
"I'm bound and determined to have a bit better of a showing this coming Thursday. I'm almost glad that the match I was in last week wasn't televised, because I'm damn sure better than that...I leave for Salt Lake City in a couple days...This time I WILL be ready."
[Flash forward to the next day to a gym across town. Shaun Cross is wrestling around with an old friend of his from IWE, Warren Bay, in a ring they had set up. Cross ducks a punch, lifting Bay up into a Fireman's Carry position, beginning to flip him over and catching him in a hangman's neckbreaker, a picture perfect "Nail in the Cross". The two men sit up in the center of the ring and begin to talk.]
Warren Bay: Damn, you were on a roll back there. What do you call that last move you got in?
Shaun Cross: That's the Nail in the Cross...Catchy name huh? [He laughs]
WB: Ah yeah, real clever. So shit...MPW huh? You hadda match yet?
SC: Yeah...A dark match last week before Thursday Night Takedown. It didn't go exactly how I wanted it to...But hey, I'm there, can't complain too hard. Couldn't have sucked too bad if they invited me back...
WB: Yeah man, congrats again though on getting there from...here...
[Warren looks around the gym and chuckles.]
So you're leaving Monday? Driving all the way to friggin Utah? Gotta be a helluva trip huh?
SC: I guess so, but I don't care for flying.
WB: Right. Right. So, you know what kinda match you're booked for Thursday? Heavyweight Championship right? [He nudges Shaun, grinning]
[Shaun laughs]
SC: Yeah right, I wish. I lose to a guy who rarely mounts an offense, of course they'll give me a title match the next week. [He nods assertively and sarcastically]. Nah, a Four Way Dance against a couple other up-and-comers, opening match on the card.
WB: Hmm...Three opponents huh? I'll...Be right back.
[Bay leaves the room, leaving Shaun sitting alone in the center of the ring. Shaun stands up and does a few bounces off the ropes, and falls backwards a couple times, taking a couple easy bumps just for something to do. Warren Bay walks back into the gym, followed by three men, two of which being familiar faces. King, and Matthew Jakkson, two other wrestlers Shaun worked with during his time in IWE entered the gym with Warren. The four of them climbed into the ring surrounding Shaun. Acquaintance was remade, hellos and congratulations were said.]
WB: Knew these guys were kickin' around here somewhere...Got time for a warm-up?
[Shaun looks around at his three former coworkers and smiles]
SC: A match with you guys to better prepare for my REAL MPW debut...Hell yeah, lets get it started.
[Jason Tomah, a newer IWE referee, quickly climbs out of the ring and rings the bell at ringside. DING DING DING!! He quickly gets back in as Shaun Cross, Warren Bay, King, and Matthew Jakkson begin to circle one another. Warren goes after Jakkson immediately locking him up in a collar and elbow tie up. Jakkson, being the bigger of the two, pushing Warren to the mat almost as quickly as the locked up. By this time, Shaun was trying to bring the 7' tall King down from his intimidating vertical base. Multiple running closelines later, King takes Shaun down with one of his own, instantly following up with an elbow drop to the sternum. As Cross slowy gets up, by now, Warren and Matthew have set a break-neck pace, focusing primarily on one another in a lightning quick back-and-forth exchange of counters. Jakkson, getting frustrated eventually delivers a toe kick to the midsection of Bay, locking him in a front-facelock and dropping down delivering a DDT, quickly rolling over and going for a pin, only getting a 2 count.]
King: C'mon Shaun, this Chicken character couldn't have taken THIS much outta ya
[King taunts as the four continue, before getting caught by a suprise dropkick from Jakkson, knocking him out of the ring. to the gym floor.
The match continues on, Warren is eventually the first to be eliminated. Being caught in midair by King is something no one should even wish upon their own worst enemy. King got the pinfall after a crushing powerslam. After seeing this, Shaun and Matthew decide they may need to join forces to bring the giant down. The battle continues, Jakkson eventually ending up chop blocking King to get him down to the mat, followed quickly by a huge diving leg drop by Cross. The two men both piling onto King with all of their weight to get the pin. After the 1, 2, 3, and King leaves the ring, Jakkson and Cross meet in the center of the ring to exchange words]
Matthew Jakkson: So it all comes down to this...May the best man win...[He smirks]
Shaun Cross: Oh don't worry. I will. [Shaun laughs]
[The two lock up, jockeying for position, Jakkson shoving Shaun to the corner. He climbs to the second rope, ready to rain down punches. Shaun counters, hooking Matthew up in a powerbomb type position and falling forward. He goes for the pin to get a 2 count. They stand back up and trade punches, Shaun eventually dodging one punch and hitting an enzuigiri. He picks Jakkson back up and whips him into the ropes, bending over for a back body drop, Jakkson leapfrogs over him, bouncing off the ropes as Cross stands up and drives his head into the mat with a vicious bulldog. Jakkson rolls Cross over before rushing to the corner, climbing to the top turnbuckle, preparing to perform his finisher, a frog splash that he's named "Hangtime". He springs off the turnbuckle, at the peak of his leap, Shaun rolls, leaving Jakkson to crash down onto the mat. Shaun takes this opportunity to lift him up off of the canvas and power him up into that fireman's carry. He hits the "Nail in the Cross" perfectly, pinning Matthew Jakkson for the 1, 2, 3. The two men stand up as Bay and King enter the ring again.]
Jakkson: Nail in the Cross huh? Clever.
Bay: My words exactly!
[They all laugh]
Jakkson: Shaun, you innovate that?
Shaun: I dunno man, I'd never seen it before. [He shrugs]
Jason: Well damn, I'd think if you ever hit it, it'd stop anyone in their tracks, just like Matt here. Warren tells us you're in a Four Way Dance like the one you guys just put on this week? Hit that friggin thing three times and you've got yourself a W.
Shaun: [He scoffs] Right, easier said than done. Trust me, I've watched all three of the guys I'm facing in the ring. Can't wait though, they're all newer members to the roster like I am, but they all seem like pretty great workers.
Bay: Hey man, you're no slouch. Just ask any New England promoter you've worked for. [He shrugs].
Shaun: Well thanks. [He nods]. Shit, I gotta get goin' home. I'm leavin' for Salt Lake City Monday, I still need to pack and stuff. [He informs the three others].
[Goodbyes and even more congratulations are given as Shaun climbs out between the ropes and hops off the apron. He reaches into his bag and throws a t-shirt and jeans on over his wrestling attire, picks up the bag and leaves the gym. Feeling much more confident after his practice sessions with a few old friends. The whole way home, his only thought is "Better luck next time..."]
