“Being his real brother I could feel I live in his shadows, but I never have and I do not now. I live in his glow.”
-Michael Morpurgo, “Private Peaceful”
***The MPW camera fades into the MPW offices, where backstage reporter Tasha Jordan is sitting down in front of the camera on a large, blue couch. Dressed in a short grey skirt and blouse, Tasha looks quite uncomfortable today, constantly fidgeting. To the left of Tasha is an empty blue couch, identical to the one in which Tasha is sitting on. The sound of a vibrating phone fills the room, and Tasha reaches down by her leg, pulling up the phone. She tries to read the number, but it comes up blocked. Instead of answering, she ignores the call, and sets the phone back down. After about five seconds, the phone starts to vibrate again. Tasha looks down at the phone, confused, and decides to pick it back up. The number is blocked again. Tasha takes a deep breath, and this time, answers the phone...***
Tasha Jordan: Hello?
***Suddenly, the room goes completely dark, including Tasha’s phone. Tasha sits in silence for a few seconds, until a deep voice escapes from the darkness and fills the room...***
: Hello Tasha...
***Tasha lets out a terrified scream, and the lights in the room instantly flash on. Across from Tasha on the once empty couch now sits one half of The Night Terrors, Clay, dressed in his usual black garb. A small but eerie grin fills his face. Clay is glaring at Tasha, who appears to be terrified. In Clay’s right hand is a phone, and he raises it toward his ear...***
Clay: Boo!
***Before Tasha can respond in any way, Clay uses all of his arm strength and tosses his phone at the brick wall, shattering it into at least forty pieces. Tasha lets out another terrified scream, this time covering her head with her arms to ensure she is not hit with any of the pieces of the phone flying across the room.Clay begins to let out a deep, evil laugh, all while watching Tasha. Tasha quickly stands up and goes to walk out of the room, but Clay stands up to, causing Tasha to freeze in fear...***
Clay: I’m sure you’re scared right now Ms. Jordan, nobody would blame you for being afraid. Fear is a natural response of mankind, and there are few who can say that they wouldn’t see terrified if in your shoes. But I took time out of my day to give you, and by proxy, the MPW, some insight into my mind. I would prefer you don’t waste my time. Now please, sit...
***Tasha Jordan does not move, still paralyzed by fear. The grin that covered Clay’s face slowly disappears, and is replaced by a glare that can would cause doubt in the bravest of men...***
Clay: I will not ask again Ms. Jordan. I do not plan to be here all day. Sit. Now...
***Tasha slowly lowers herself back onto the couch, eyes never leaving Clay. The grin returns to Clay’s face as he sits back down across from Tasha. Silence once again fills the room, until Tasha clears her throat and starts to speak...***
Tasha Jordan: Well, um, I here, um, with the, uh...
Clay: You need to relax Ms. Jordan. I promise you, that whatever is filling your imagination right now is much worse than what will happen tonight. I’m not here to hurt you, that’s promise. So take your time and let’s do this right. Take a couple of breaths, collect yourself, and let’s start over. Okay?
***Tasha slowly nods to Clay, and then clears her throat again. After wiping her brow, Tasha puts on a smile and looks to the camera, beginning to speak...
Tasha Jordan: Good evening ladies and gentlemen, today, I am honored to sit down for a one on one conversation with one of the newest members of the MPW roster, Clay. Clay, how are you doing today?
Clay: How am I doing you ask? Well, to be honest, I’m feeling annoyed.
Tasha Jordan: May I ask why?
Clay: Considering that is the point of your job, to ask questions, you most certainly can. You see Ms. Jordan, I’m annoyed because of MPW management. Two weeks ago, my brother, Samuel, and I, stepped into the MPW ring for the very first time, live on Thursday Night Takedown. And instead of fading away under the bright lights, we shined brighter than any light in the arena as we dominated our opponents for the night, Real Steele. Then, the just this last Thursday, on Independence Day, The Night Terrors proved that they belong in the MPW right by defeating “The Savior” Taufik and “The Samurai” Shaun Cross. Not only did we defeat both teams, we decimated them. We engulfed them in the power that belongs to those who live in the darkness. My brother Samuel and I showed everybody just what a force we can be in the ring. We showed the world that there is a team greater than the current MPW Tag Team Champions Trey Baxter and Jackson Blaze. That tag team, is The Night Terrors...
And knowing this, seeing the destruction that we have left in our wake, MPW management had a choice to make. Do they do the right thing, and bring Jackson Blaze back from suspension a week early to set up the best possible match for the main event of the one year anniversary show of MPW, by having the Tag Team Champions defend their titles against the only men who can beat them, The Night Terrors? Or does MPW management sit around with their thumbs up their asses and pass on what could the greatest match in the entire one year history of MPW and put me in a match with Adam Steele? I think you and everybody that pays attention to the MPW knows by now, that instead of headlining the biggest show in the history of MPW with a clash between the past and the future of the company, I have been forced to again step into the ring with the pathetic excuse for a wrestler, Adam Steele...
Tasha Jordan: While I’m not here to argue with you, how can it said that a main event between our MPW World Champion Trey Baxter and the man who ended Baxter’s first reign as World Champion, Johnny Clash?
Clay: On any normal night, you may be right. That would be a fine main event for any run of the mill Takedown. But while most people look at annual anniversaries as a time to reflect to the past, I instead see them as an opportunity to look towards the future. And while nobody can deny that Baxter and Clash have been a huge part of the MPW’s history, there are only two who stand today as the true future stars of the MPW, and neither of them are Baxter, and certainly not Clash either. The Night Terrors are the future of the MPW, and we have already shown the world that fact twice. But thanks to MPW management overlooking the two best talents on their roster because we don’t fit the “image” that the MPW would like it’s champions to project, I must prove it for a third time on Takedown...
Tasha Jordan: I don’t think it’s fair to say that you or your brother are being held back because of your appearance. To be fair, you and your brother are still relatively new to the MPW. Certainly you didn’t come in expecting to be handed anything, especially an opportunity at Championship gold, did you?
Clay: Handed anything, no. Even with all of the weak, pathetic, and useless members of the MPW roster standing in my way, I understand nobody is to be handed anything. But to blatantly ignore what is going on in front of you is a major misstep on the part of MPW management. To turn your head and refuse the greatest force that the MPW has ever seen the title shot they deserve is just bad business. And to slap the most dominating, powerful, and meaningful team this company has and will ever have in the face by allowing Baxter and Blaze to continue to hold the MPW Tag Team Championships hostage as they focus on their own agendas is utter insanity. So, yes, I’m annoyed that I my brother and I are not receiving the opportunity we have earned in that right. I’m annoyed that I have to prove to the world again the power held by The Night Terrors. And most importantly, I’m annoyed that I have to step into the ring again with Adam Steele...
Tasha Jordan: Again, I think you’re being unfair. Adam Steele is quite the competitor...
Clay: Really? Why don’t you tell that to the woman who humiliated him in the ring last night, Angel Kash. Do you honestly believe that either Adam or his clown of a brother Matt stand a chance in the ring against me or my brother Samuel?
Tasha Jordan: History is filled with people using the motivation of a loss to rebound with victory...
Clay: I’ll give you that, but you know what doesn’t get talked about? All of the times that the better force, the stronger force, the smarter force wins. Everybody remembers an underdog beating the odds, but for every underdog, there are a thousand who fail because they are just too weak. They are just too outmatched. Take the Roman Empire for example. Rome defeated every enemy who crossed its path. They decimated the Etruscans. For over two centuries, they humiliated the Gauls. They literally wiped Carthage off the map. They were a power never seen before in the history of mankind, much like my brother and I here in the MPW. If not for Rome tearing itself apart with political infighting and jealousy, we might all be Romans today...
Tasha Jordan: So you’re saying all dominate forces come to an end?
Clay: No, I’m saying the only weaknesses that can destroy a force as powerful as the Romans must be created internally. And when it comes to weaknesses, The Night Terrors have none. Together, Samuel and I know each move that each of us will be made before it happens. We know that no matter what the challenge, there is nothing that can tear us apart in that ring. There is no force on this planet that can defeat us. Not Baxter and Blaze, and as we’ve already proven, especially not Real Steele.
Tasha Jordan: You’re referencing your tag team victory over Adam and Matt Steele two weeks ago, correct?
Clay: Yes I am. As I said before, we dominated Real Steele in that ring. Their suffering that night served as a notice to the rest of the MPW locker room what it means to be a real team...
Tasha Jordan: Real Steele has much in common with The Night Terrors. Both are teams of brothers, each with varying styles, and long history of having each other’s backs.
Clay: You can say all of that, but why stop there? One partner weighs more on each team. You want some more ridiculous comparisons? When you say things like that, bending the truth to fit your story, you destroy any credibility you may have. The Night Terrors are an unbreakable power, while Real Steele are just a couple of bickering brother’s who like to fight. But they are one another’s weakness. You can see it each time they step into the ring together. On one hand, you have Adam, a man, while pathetic, actually wants to be better than he is. He wants to improve, to win, to excel. He is willing to put in the work to become something better. You never know, he might one day achieve his dream of becoming mediocre. And then on the other hand, you have his brother Matt. A child who enjoys goofing off, getting a reaction from the MPW fans, no matter the cost. Like just this last week, Adam was in trouble against Angel Kash. And what does his brother do? Instead of coming down to help, he just gets in the way, and costs his brother the match. Adam will never get anywhere in this business as long as he is living in the shadow of his brother’s jokes. And Matt will always be looked down upon as long as he stands in the shadow of his brother, because he can never live up to his loser of a brother, which is saying something. Real Steele is nothing when you compare them to The Night Terrors...
Tasha Jordan: Speaking of a brother’s shadow, most people have taken you as the silent type. It seems that your brother does much of the talking, while you seem to follow. Would that be fair to say that sometimes it appears you are in Samuel’s shadow?
Clay: You’re just like everyone out there who sees me for the first time. He’s a mindless beast, he must be brainless. He’s just the muscle. The fact is, in the darkness, there is no shadow to be overlooked in. My brother showed me the true path, and I am forever grateful to him for that. My brother became my teacher, and I learned everything he had to share. Among the many things that my brother saw inside of me on that fateful day, the building darkness, the year of pain, and a newfound lack of fear, my intelligence was among them. For without it, I would have never been able to follow the true path and embrace fear. Without my intelligence, I would become just another man, going through the motions until the end of my days, ignorant of the truth. Stupidity is a trait of humanity, and thanks to my brother, I am no longer human...
Tasha Jordan: Excuse me?
Clay: That’s right. The Night Terrors are the monsters created by the imaginations of all those around us, brought to life. We are powered through the darkness and chaos that is life itself. The truth destroys all weaknesses of those that embrace it, and it gives those who embrace it power you couldn’t even dream of. Greed, jealousy, none of it means anything to us. I am not here to “be the best”, nor could I give a damn about the money. We are here to show the world what it means to embrace the fear. We are here to terrorize the masses, and by doing so freeing them. Millions will see our message, and the power of the darkness will expand beyond anything this world has seen before...
You see Ms. Jordan, MPW management is afraid of that happening, and because MPW management fears the darkness inside of my brother and I, they are trying their damndest to hold us back. They know that once our message of truth starts finding it’s home in the hearts of the masses, they are going lose money on tee shirt sales. They know that all of the fancy merchandise created to pump money out of the fans will go to waste. MPW management knows they can not show the world Champions like The Night Terrors, otherwise they might lose sponsors. So instead, they stick me in a match with a man clearly my lesser. Through Adam Steele, I will make their wishes backfire. I show Adam no mercy, no quarter, and there will be no stopping me until Adam is laying motionless on the mat. I will show his childlike brother Matt that his imagination of monsters is actually of one reality. And I will show the world, just one more time, why my brother and I deserve our shot at Baxter and Blaze...
Tasha Jordan: So you’re looking past Adam Steele then?
Clay: No, I’m looking through him. You know, it’s funny, when we stepped into the ring with Real Steele for the first time, it was my brother Samuel to get the pinfall over my opponents brother, Matt. As sick and twisted as my brother can be, he is more about the message. The victory that he earned that night will pale to the one I earn Thursday Night based on pure destruction. Adam will feel pain he has never before experienced, and will never want to experience again. I personally am going to make Adam Steele into the final proving point in the case of why The Night Terrors should next week be standing across from Trey Baxter and Johnny Blaze, with the MPW Tag Team Championships on the line. After Thursday Night Takedown, when I shove Adam Steele into the abyss of career suicide, there will be nothing MPW management can do to hold The Night Terrors back. A new force has arrived, and with each day, our power grows. This week, it will be at the expense of Adam Steele. You have my word on that...
Tasha Jordan: Well, I thank you for this time you have given us, it has been quite enlightening...
Clay: Let me guess, when you got this assignment, you thought you would ask some questions, get a couple of grunts in response, and have to edit something together for any usable footage?
Tasha Jordan: Honestly?
Clay: Always...
Tasha Jordan: I’m pleasantly surprised, yes. I really thought I was going to spend fifteen minutes talking to a sidekick. I guess I was wrong...
Clay: Like most people, most of your assumptions turn out to be false. Just like you’re first assumption as I entered the room...
Tasha Jordan: What do you mean?
Clay: I have no intention of hurting you. But I’m not the one that you should fear...
***The lights in the room go completely black again for a couple of seconds. As the lights turn back on, Tasha’s eye’s focus on where Clay is sitting. However, he isn’t looking at her, but instead smiling at something behind her. As her eyes fill with terror, she slowly turns her head backwards, and freezes as she stares straight into the eyes of the other half of The Night Terror’s, Samuel. Tasha begins to shake in fear as Samuel jumps toward her, and she covers her face with her arms. As she does this, the lights go completely black once again, causing Tasha to scream like she never has before. This time the darkness lasts for much longer than before. After about fifteen seconds of complete darkness, the lights flash on again, and Tasha is quivering in fear, sitting in the corner of the room, completely alone. Tasha opens her eyes, sees that she is alone, and starts to take in some deep breaths, trying to calm herself down. Above Tasha, in bold black letters written on the wall, is a short message. “I’ll be watching you Tasha...” and below that, in the same lettering, is “-Samuel”. The MPW camera slowly fades to black as Tasha looks up and sees the message, now completely immobilized by fear...............***
