The scene is a quiet bar in Chicago, Illinois. There’s a small crowd, which is abnormal for a Friday night. It may or may not have something to do with the fact that baseball fans in this city don’t have anything to celebrate this year with how terrible both teams have been, even though at one table, there’s a Cubs fan and a White Sox fan, both drunk, having a beer and sharing their sorrows with one another. However, not too far away, Valentina Madison is sitting down at another table, a martini in her right hand. She takes a sip as she observes what the baseball fans are doing. She shakes her head.
Valentina Madison: Those poor guys! So depressed! This is why I can never be a super fan of any team, too much depression and sorrow that comes with it.
She’s not aware that the bartender overhead her.
Bartender: It’s worth the rush that comes with victory however.
Valentina Madison: Not really, I studied that last year. The rush is only temporary, because the realities of the real world often come around the very next morning.
Bartender: You’re one of those Northwestern kids aren’t you? They’re always too deep in their studies I tell you!
The bartender walks away. Valentina is used to this, as this side of town is mostly full of Illinois students and graduates. She senses that someone has just sat down next to her. She turns to her right and a smile comes on her face!
Valentina: Hey Danny! I wasn’t expecting you!
The two stand up and give each other a hug. Valentina and Danny have been friends for years, going back to when they were next door neighbors when his parents moved into her neighborhood.
Danny: I’ve known you a long time. You’re always around here when you come to this side of town.
Valentina Madison: What are you doing here though? I thought you were going to take photographs at that bachelor party that invited you.
Danny: About that… the wedding was cancelled, so that gig’s off the table. I found something that’s funny today.
Valentina Madison: Really? What is it?
Danny pulls something out of his pocket and sits down. Valentina sits down as well as he unfolds the piece of paper he had in his pocket. Valentina tries to hide laughter because she immediately recognizes it as the MPW Sunday Night Reloaded card that’s posted on their website.
Danny: It’s this wrestling card that I found on the Internet.
Valentina Madison: Danny, you don’t even watch wrestling.
Danny: A friend of mine, who does watch wrestling, found it. I find it funny, because there’s someone named Valentina Madison that’s scheduled to be there. What a coincidence! I guess you’re not the only Valentina Madison in the world! (laughs)
Valentina says nothing. Danny has no awareness whatsoever about her professional wrestling career or the fact that she has been pursuing it for nearly the last year. She’s trying hard not to laugh.
Danny: This thing takes place on Sunday. Speaking of Sunday, I know you’re not a sports person, but my brother’s hosting a football party on Sunday to watch the Bears-Lions game. Are you in?
Valentina Madison: I’d love to, but I’ll be busy that day.
Danny: Doing what?
Valentina Madison: I have a commitment. I’m flying out to California tomorrow morning as a matter of fact.
Danny: Why in the world would you go to California for? That’s just odd, no offense.
Valentina Madison: Um, well…
One of Valentina’s weaknesses is about to come out. She tends to find herself in situations where she makes things more complicated than they really are. Her worry is that Danny won’t be accepting of learning that she’s a professional wrestler and while she’s not showing her fear, she’s feeling it.
Valentina Madison: …I still have some grant money left from college. I figured I’d spend it on a vacation to Disneyland or something.
Danny: I don’t like to call you a liar, but I’m not buying that. Aren’t you a little old to be going to Disneyland by yourself?
Valentina Madison: Well…I..
Danny: And I thought you were out of that grant money!
Valentina says “shit” under her breath, but she got caught.
Danny: You’re hiding something.
Valentina Madison: I don’t know why you would think that. You know I’ve always been straight with you.
Danny: You lied to me about the money so you wouldn’t help me get a new hard drive!
Valentina Madison: Danny, don’t be ridiculous! You know I’d always help you if you needed it.
Danny: So, what’s up then? What are you hiding?
Valentina: Danny, I’ve been keeping a secret from you for almost a year now.
Danny: Really? Go on.
Valentina Madison: It’s right in front of your face.
Valentina points to the printed wrestling card that Danny brought with him. He looks at it, and his eyes get bigger in realization of what the secret is.
Danny: Wait, you’re a….
Valentina Madison: Professional wrestler? Yeah. I’m so sorry, I wasn’t sure how you’d feel about that.
Danny: You always have to complicate things, Valentina.
Danny looks at the card again as he lets it sink in that Valentina is a professional wrestler. He doesn’t know how to feel about this.
Danny: Of all the things I thought you’d do with your life, I never thought you’d stoop to an exaggerated, theatrical, athletic competition that high school dropouts and uneducated people are diehards for. I thought you’d be a psychologist, or maybe a graduate professor for a communications class, but not a professional wrestler! I didn’t even know you were interested in something that’s, no offense, fake.
Valentina Madison: It’s not fake! Remember that shoulder injury that I said was caused by a fall down the stairs? It was actually caused by a mistake I made during a wrestling training session. I’m very sorry that you’re one of those people that stick such a tired stereotype on something that’s actually plenty more fascinating than the narrow-minded give it credit for. I know you’re going to ask why I’m doing this. I used to watch wrestling all the time when I was little with my father, and I was always hooked! Honestly, it’s what I’ve wanted to do for a while, but everyone has all these expectations of me just because of everything that I’ve done in my life. Being an honors student was exciting! My life at Northwestern was memorable! But for years, I’ve always done what people expected of me. I figured now is the time to do something that I want for me! Danny, we’ve been best friends since the third grade. Surely you understand!
Danny calms down and thinks about it for a bit.
Danny: I remember I would feel sorry for you because you always seemed like you only did what was expected of you, and often times, not what makes you happy. I’m scared for you, wrestling can be rather, brutal, and you’re wrestling two guys? Are you sure you’re not going to get hurt? What if you end up paralyzed and the rest of your life is spent in a wheelchair? What if this doesn’t work out for you? As a friend, I’m hoping that you don’t waste that degree that you worked so hard for.
Valentina Madison: Danny, I appreciate your concern, but I promise you, I know what I’m getting myself into. I’ve studied this sport, this company, the other wrestlers, for a while now. Women have a place in wrestling. MPW’s world champion is a woman, as a matter of fact.
Danny: Whoever lost the belt to her must be a real pussy then. (laughs)
Valentina gives Danny a stern look.
Danny: What?
Valentina Madison: I wouldn’t call Trey Baxter anything like that. He was the champion for a reason you know. I’m not a fan of his attitude, but you wouldn’t have the fortitude to call him that to his face.
Danny: Sorry Val, I’m still wrapping my head around this. I’m just shocked. I guess it’s cool because from what my friend tells me, MPW is one of those places that travel all over the world. You get to see the world now!
Valentina Madison: It’ll be fun, I can tell you that right now.
Danny: That means that you and I are going to be seeing a lot less of each other though. You said you’re leaving tomorrow morning right?
Valentina Madison: Right.
Danny: Val, I never expected this from you at all. But, if you really want to do this, who am I to say no? You know that I’ll always support you no matter what you do and besides, at least I have a reason to watch now. Try explaining this to your parents…
Valentina Madison: I’ll worry about that once I cross that bridge. Get something to drink Danny, this is our last night before we go our separate ways for a while.
Danny: Promise me that you won’t be a stranger when you’re kicking somebody’s ass alright?
Valentina Madison: You have my promise!
Danny gets a drink, and the two continue their conversation about Valentina’s decision to pursue a professional wrestling career. Valentina is aware of the huge change she’s going to be making, but she’s not intimidated by it. She feels in her heart that wrestling is what’s going to make her happy in her life going forward. While her first match in MPW is far from a headliner, she knows that it’s merely the beginning of what she believes will be a wonderful journey for her.
September 28, 2013
Valentina has made her way to Anaheim. This time, she’s inside of a classroom in the vicinity of the city. She’s sitting on a desk that’s right by a whiteboard and she’s in high spirits. She’s about to speak about her upcoming debut match that’s to take place in front of a sold out crowd at the Honda Center the very next day.
Valentina Madison: Hello again MPW! It’s me! I must say that High Stakes II was a thriller of a show and as a woman, I am proud that this great company is now represented by a woman of honor like Roxi Johnson. Roxi, I’ll give you a shout out! You’re an inspiration for all women, and I thank you for showing the world what women are really capable of! I want to be successful just like you, but that’s down the road. At the moment, I’m excited beyond words to finally do something for me! People look at me and say ‘she’s a wrestler?’ I understand why, I don’t embody a person that was built and bred into professional wrestling. But, this is something I’ve wanted! It was rather awkward when I got the proverbial question of ‘what do you want to do with your life?’ I was always stumped at what to say because I was never sure how people would take what my answer would have been. I have been fascinated and enamored with this sport ever since I sat down with my dad and started watching at the young age of six. It’s going to be a tad intimidating when everyone in my life will come to know about this, considering I was brought up with such enormous expectations, but I am looking forward to what this experience is going to bring me.
Everyone has to start somewhere in professional wrestling. I know that folks like Trey, Roxi and others started at the bottom and worked their way to where they are now and it’s a challenge I am looking forward to. I wasn’t expecting a match where I had to face two wrestlers rather than one, especially when one of them is almost three times my size, but that just adds to the mystique and the excitement to the journey that I am about to partake in. Nathan James, I take notice of the fact that you’re a man of few words. Of what I know of you, you’re back in business and you’re making your return. At first, I thought you were new to the company just like me, but I came to realize that you’re not. It surprises me, because I learned and studied the veterans of MPW and I couldn’t find you anywhere. Take no offense to the hypothesis I’m about to make, but based on what I just said, and the fact that you’re in this match with me, I have reason to believe that you’re not one of the highly touted competitors this company has to offer. I sympathize with you on your injury, but I know very well that if you were highly touted, MPW would have made a little noise about your return. Is it safe to say that you didn’t achieve anything before your injury? Possibly, but I’m not going to jump to conclusions. But, you’re a man of many weaknesses, starting with this:
Valentina picks up a blue marker, opens it, and writes “FOCUS” in big letters on the whiteboard.
Valentina Madison: FOCUS! In that short display you had, you didn’t even mention me, or Hellbender who I’m going to get to shortly. You broke into a tiny, little speech about Iconic Aggression and how they make you mad and that you want to do something about them. I’m sorry Nathan, but I doubt Iconic Aggression remotely considers you a threat whatsoever. Take it one week at a time, focus on what’s important and that’s our match. Your head is in the clouds as you fantasize about taking down Iconic Aggression, but I’m sorry to say Nathan, that you must have Fantasy Prone Personality because considering the notoriety of the I.A., fantasizing is as close as you’ll ever get to getting your hands on any of them. I’m almost disappointed that instead of focusing on this match, you choose to do this, and on top of that, refer to yourself as some tired clichés. My studies have shown me that those that resort to tired clichés are those with enormously morose vocabulary and often times they amount to little in this sport. I think I understand why you’re a man of few words Nathan. You’re such because you really, truly, have nothing of value to say whatsoever.
Valentina stands up from her desk and erases “FOCUS” from the whiteboard. She picks up the marker again and starts to write on the whiteboard, though what she’s writing isn’t visible at the moment. She steps away and caps the marker before she puts it down. The whiteboard says “Reasons why wrestlers go psychotic”. Underneath, there’s a bullet point list:
1) To cause or inflict psychological intimidation upon their opponents
2) To create an aura of intimidation that’s merely illusionary
3) Possible abuse or trauma from their childhood days
Valentina sighs.
Valentina: I’ve seen far too many of these types. Hellbender, logistically, I should be intimidated by you because of your self-reference to being a monster or the devil’s favorite demon. Sadly for you, MPW already has wrestlers of your kind around, in Crow and Impaler. I pose to you this question Hellbender, what makes you unique from those two? Your name, your nicknames, and even where you say you come from, is all just an illusion designed to scare me. I might be new to the business, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t come prepared to deal with all types of personality. I challenge you to show me something unique from those that have shown the list next to me. If the cause of who you are is due to abuse or trauma from childhood, I’m sorry that you went through it, but your case isn’t as unique as those types that came before you in wrestling, nor is it an excuse for the person that you are. If you want to inflict anything on me, it won’t be psychological, I’ll tell you that much. Your size gives you a heavy advantage over me, but I’m not worried. You’re nearly the same size as Impaler, but Aeryn Ashfield managed to beat him at High Stakes so I know I can overcome the advantage you have over me.
It’s time for you to come to reality Hellbender, personalities like you have become rather antiquated in the world of wrestling and even Crow and Impaler themselves don’t separate themselves from the rest of those psychotic types in the sport. You’re a man that’s even less vocal than Nathan James. Perhaps you’re trying to find the right words. Or perhaps you’re trying to plot what “method of torture” you personally want to use against Nathan and I. I can only hypothesize about your motives and your plans as far as our match is concerned, but I won’t know for sure until I step in the ring with you on Sunday. You’re stronger than me, but quite clearly, you have a disadvantage in the intellectual department. I’m a woman that has always maximized my strengths to minimize my weaknesses and fighting you will be no different. What I lack in strength, I make up with wits. What I lack in size, I make up with heart and determination. You can inflict any kind of torture you want Hellbender, but you can’t take my hunger and drive away from me. People like you merely want to intimidate others because something intimidates you in your heart. Do me a favor however, spare me the prototypical nonsense wrestlers such as you like to say about ‘being cruel and heartless’ or any derivative of that.
Valentina pauses one last time to erase the whiteboard. Her confidence hasn’t wavered a bit.
Valentina Madison: My journey begins at the Honda Center against you two and I’ll be the one that’s going to emerge victorious! Come Reloaded, the hunt for success begins for the Wonderous Wildcat!
Valentina departs with a confident smile, ending the promo and the scene.
The scene is a quiet bar in Chicago, Illinois. There’s a small crowd, which is abnormal for a Friday night.
