September 29, 2013 – Post-Reloaded
The scene is the parking lot close to a half hour after the latest Reloaded episode has ended. There are very few cars in sight as plenty of people have already left. Valentina Madison has yet to leave. She could have left after her match at the very beginning of the show after she had pulled out an amazing debut victory, but she chose not to. Instead, she chose to stick around until the end of the show and study the matches of everyone else. She’s looking through her notes that she spent a great amount of time working on.
Valentina Madison: I learned plenty tonight. But, tonight was unbelievable!
Valentina reflects on the night. She’s happy knowing that she has nothing but positive memories she’s going to be taking with her. But suddenly, she remembers something.
Valentina Madison: Oh my god, I forgot I was supposed to call Danny after my match was over. He’s not going to be happy. Maybe I should lie and say that my phone had no service. Wait…
Valentina immediately realizes she’s overthinking the situation.
Valentina Madison: That’s no good. He’ll forgive me. Why do I need to lie?
Valentina pulls her phone out of her pocket and makes the phone call she promised. Within a few seconds, Danny picks up at the other end.
Danny: It’s about time you called.
Valentina Madison: Danny, I’m really sorry. I got caught up in the moment of everything. I decided to stick around and study everyone else so I could learn about the types of people I could be wrestling in the future. I hope you’re not mad at me for calling so late.
Danny: I figured you were up to something. Don’t worry about a thing Val, I’m not mad at you. I only wanted you to call me so you could tell me how it went. You know I don’t have the time to really invest in watching the carnival on television.
Valentina Madison: Danny, wrestling is not a sideshow attraction.
Danny: Cool it Valentina, I’m just messing with you. (laughs) So let’s cut to the chase. How did it go?
Valentina Madison: There are numerous perspectives to talk about when you ask me that question. I can’t answer it without a specific one.
Danny: (sigh) Don’t make a simple question so complicated. I just want to know what it was like being out in front of a crowd. Were you nervous? I know nothing about wrestling but I’m sure that going out there and performing in front of all those people must be a real case of a nervous shutdown.
Valentina Madison: I wasn’t nervous at all. I was standing behind the curtains, waiting to go through them. Oh my, I had never felt so excited in my life. I could hear the crowd already waiting in anticipation for the first match of the evening. I looked around and the area behind the curtain was blank until I saw Hellbender come close to me. He’s even bigger in person as a matter of fact. He looked at me and I looked back at him and I didn’t flinch for a second. I looked and I saw Nathan James ready to make his entrance into the arena as well. It was a very mesmerizing experience standing right near those guys knowing that both of them wanted to make mincemeat out of me.
Danny: And you weren’t afraid of that?
Valentina Madison: Of course not! It’s a lesson of life. If you want something so bad, you can’t be afraid of whatever may get in your way. I was the first to walk through the curtain and I felt chills of excitement running down my spine. Once I got inside that ring, I took a good look around and I soaked it all in. Inside, I was very happy because it was something that I had always wanted. I just stood in my corner and took in everything: the people, the atmosphere, the lights, the reaction from the crowd. It was amazing! It was almost the way I pictured it. Unfortunately, I could not soak it in for too long because next thing you know, Hellbender is walking toward me with a facial expression like he wanted to kill me!
There’s a slight silence for a few seconds. Valentina had gotten a little bit excited toward the end of how she described the first entrance she’d ever make in the world of professional wrestling. She hears Danny laughing.
Valentina Madison: What’s so funny?
Danny: I think it’s interesting how you’re so excited over something that’s so trivial. I don’t mean any offense, it’s just that I’m out of the wrestling loop. I never imagined anyone would be exciting over something that I find so ornery. But, I’ve said this to you already. I’m with you a hundred percent and I’m glad to hear that you had nothing but positivity in mind. You maintained that same positivity after you lost right?
Valentina is appalled to hear that.
Valentina Madison: Danny!
Danny: I’m sorry Val, but facts are facts. You were in there with two guys! They were stronger than you by default. I imagine that having to beat one guy is already tough enough, but two? I just can’t imagine it. I’m still skeptical over the whole thing. Really! You didn’t get hurt did you?
Valentina Madison: No, I ended up being fine. And guess what? I won! LOSER!
Valentina laughs as there is silence on the other end.
Danny: You won?
Valentina Madison: Yeah! I outsmarted them! As if my night couldn’t get any better! I got up after I won and the referee raised my hand. The crowd was cheering me and I felt nothing but a rush of happiness in my own heart. I was telling myself in my head to wake up because I was in disbelief at first! The first question that popped into my head was: “this has to be a dream right?” But that didn’t last long, because I knew this was real! It was a dream, but it was a dream come true. Never in my life did I feel like a dream came true until that moment where I got my hand raised! It was wonderful, feeling like I did something for me, and successfully at that.
Danny: Really? Wow. What about the time you won the regional spelling bee in the sixth grade?
Valentina Madison: That was fun, but I really only participated because my parents wanted me to.
Danny: The time where you were voted “Most Likely To Succeed” in high school?
Valentina Madison: I never endeavored to achieve that. It just happened!
Danny: Graduating Northwestern in the top five percent of your class?
Valentina Madison: It was expected of me! It was a joyous occasion sure, but graduating with such honors was never my own dream, it was my parents’ dream.
Danny: You really want to do this wrestling thing don’t you?
Valentina Madison: I do. Danny, I understand you’re still having a hard time wrapping your head around this but I appreciate that you’re supporting me. I know this is not easy for you to accept. I know you’re a skeptic. I can detect your skepticism and worry in your voice. This means so much to me and I can’t imagine this all crashing down! I’m doing this to succeed, not to make easy money or to be famous! Succeeding in something that you love to do is one of the greatest meanings of life! You understand, right?
Danny: I do understand and I can feel how much this means to you by how excited you are when you talk about wrestling. I can sense that you really want this by how you described your experience tonight. Naturally, I’m afraid and worried for you that something bad may happen to you and everything you worked so hard for in life will become meaningless. You know just as much as I do that life can change in an instant. I appreciate your understanding of my concern Val. I’m just trying to be a friend.
Valentina Madison: I appreciate that, thanks. But life is a game of Risk, you don’t know what you can accomplish in this world until you try.
Danny: I miss having you around already.
Valentina Madison: I miss you too. I promise that when I come back to Chicago, we’ll have a party alright?
Danny: I’ll hold you to that. Keep up the good work Valentina, I wish you nothing but the best with this.
Valentina Madison: Thanks Danny! Good night!
Danny: Good night! (click)
Valentina puts her phone back in her pocket, and she keeps soaking it all in.
Valentina Madison: First match in MPW! It wasn’t a headliner. Heck, it wasn’t even on television. But as of right now, I can say that this is the greatest night of my life. I might as well soak this in for a little more before I leave. Nothing that I’ve accomplished in my life can ever be fulfilling as tonight was!
Valentina soaks in the scene for a few seconds longer before she decides to leave. It was a memorable night for the young Evanston, Illinois native and she’s highly optimistic that tonight was merely the start of a positive future for her in the unpredictable world of wrestling.
October 5, 2013
The scene is a grassy meadow on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon. Valentina is in the center of it in casual attire, including a Northwestern sweater. It’s partly cloudy, but there’s some sun in the area. Valentina looks serious, but she’s still her usual, optimistic self. Nathan James and Hellbender were something else, but the young Wildcat knows that Christian Carter will be a bigger challenge.
Valentina Madison: My mother always taught me, when I was growing up, to never take anything for granted. It’s a mantra that I personally live by. Last week at Reloaded, I took that match that I had and I ran with it all I could! I put everything into it. I could tell Nathan James was underestimating me and it ended up costing him a bitter defeat. I could even sense that Hellbender was taking the match for granted, but I wasn’t and that’s why I came out victorious last week while Hellbender and Nathan James had to look themselves in the mirror and ask themselves what they did wrong. There’s a reason why I’m coming out here on this wonderful afternoon and talking about appreciation for what you have in your life, wrestling and non-wrestling. My next opponent, you all know his name, is Christian Carter. He’s going to be a fascinating challenge, because his story intrigues me and he’s got a pedigree with MPW that he can fall back on. However, he’s an unfortunate case of someone that goes through the motions. Sadly, he’s one of those types that seem lost and forsaken and I sympathize with him and hope he can find his way. But, I’m not going to hold back! I’m going to go into this match, and I’ll prove to be victorious again!
Christian, let me tell you right away that I’ve done plenty of research on you. I spent countless hours studying you and what you’ve been able to accomplish. I truly mean what I say when I say that your story is a fascinating one. You were the first Sin City champion in MPW’s history and I have nothing but respect for those that have held that championship from you all the way to Jackson Blaze. At one time Christian, you were one of the top competitors MPW had to offer. You even competed for the World championship at one point. I have no doubts at all about your talents and your potential. However, it’s a shame that someone with such talent and potential has to take it for granted. Your lack of appreciation for what you’ve done and your lack of regard for your loved ones has turned your career into a shell of what it used to be. You had the world at your fingertips sir, and you let it slip away just because you couldn’t and to this day, still can’t get over your addiction to alcohol. Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered where you went wrong? There was no reason at all for you to be left off the High Stakes card, and yet, despite your talent, your name was nowhere to be found at MPW’s marquee event.
Valentina pauses and thinks about everything she has in her life, from her family, to her friends, to her career. A smile comes across her face as she continues.
Valentina Madison: I’ve graduated one of the most prestigious colleges in America and those four years were no picnic. My parents had high expectations of me. But through it all, I always appreciated my background. I never take things for granted. I wrestled with more passion and drive in a match that wasn’t even on television than you did the last time you competed. You have gone from a man that once challenged Johnny Clash for the biggest prize in MPW, to a man that’s a loner who doesn’t seem to have an ounce of care in the world anymore. It’s simple psychology Christian, when you’re a loner, you have a harder time surviving in this society. You’re more likely to live in misery. You’re more likely to drown in your regrets. I pose this question to you not because I want to be your friend, but because I’ve always had compassion for my fellow human being. How many more times are you going to relapse? How many more times are you going to be hospitalized because of said relapses? How many more times are you going to hurt the ones you love with your selfish, inexcusable, wreckless behavior? Is that extra sip of alcohol worth the pain Shelley feels in her heart when she sees you relapse? Is that routine trip to the emergency room worth the fading light that’s your career?
Valentina shakes her head as she thinks about how Christian Carter once had it all in his grasp, only to allow his own personal demons to take it all away from him.
Valentina Madison: I fear that you haven’t hit your rock bottom despite everything you’ve put your loved ones through thus far. You should be a contender in the World title scene like Roxi, but instead, you’re wrestling against me and that’s not a knock on my own abilities because I have faith in myself. I see this match as a heck of an opportunity for me. As much as I feel for you and your loneliness, I can’t and won’t let it blind me from what I have to do at Reloaded and that’s show the world that I can hang with the greatest that MPW has to offer. I want to show everyone that I can be as successful like women such as Roxi Johnson and Aeryn Ashfield and I have much respect for them. You coast on by these days Christian, your passion is gone! I’ve always wanted this and I always felt that professional wrestling was my calling in spite of what was expected of me coming from such an illustrious and intellectual background. You’re stronger than me physically, but emotionally and psychologically, you’re frail! If I beat you, it’ll be another excuse for you to go back to the bottle. I have never made an excuse in my life to allow a vice to break me Christian and I’m not going to start now. You’re a shell of the wrestler you once were, and you’re also a ghost of the man that you used to be.
There are a few lessons I want to teach you Christian and unfortunately, I don’t have a whiteboard to write those things down, but please, listen to this carefully. The first lesson I want to teach you is that you can never, ever take anything for granted and that’s what people like you, those that are abusers of drugs and alcohol, tend to do. Pity, considering a man of your talent and potential! The second lesson I want to teach you is that there’s always a glimmer of hope, no matter how dark your world may be! A personal example of mine was when I applied for admission to attend Princeton University. It was a dream of mine to go to school there, but they rejected me. For a day or two, I felt worthless, but I knew that my life still had a bright future! I didn’t let a disappointing event like that weigh me down. The third and last lesson that I want to teach you is that success isn’t just handed to you. I know moving up the ladder in MPW will not be easy and I have to work hard to be the best I can be! I’m willing to put in everything I have for success! The only way I can teach you these lessons Christian, is by defeating you at Reloaded and that’s what I’m going to do! I hope you wake up and correct your wrongs that are holding you back someday, but until then, come Sunday, the hunt for success continues for this Wondrous Wildcat!
Valentina gathers herself for a bit after her expressions regarding her match at Reloaded. She feels for Christian, because she knows that her match with him is a potential show stealer, but she has a stern expression on her face knowing that she has to do what she has to do to continue the hunt for success: defeat MPW’s first Sin City champion and really make a name for herself!
The scene is the parking lot close to a half hour after the latest Reloaded episode has ended. There are very few cars in sight as plenty of people have already left.
