(An Aeryn Ashfield/Soul Shadow joint production/RP)
{Immediately after the main event, Aeryn Ashfield and Soul Shadow have come into the backstage area. Both are filled with elation, having just scored a major victory over Soul’s rivals the Damned. Overcome with adrenaline, Aeryn turns and gives her partner an enormous embrace. Soul’s eyes grow wide with surprise, but they soon soften as he returns the gesture. After a few moments, the two pull apart. Aeryn face is flush with excitement, Soul’s with a touch of embarrassment.}
Aeryn: That was bloody great, mate! We finally took it to the Damned after all they’ve put you through the past few weeks!
Soul: Thanks in large part to you. We are really, really good together, Aeryn. Were perfect compliments to each other, able to combine our strengths with ease and know almost exactly what the other’s thinking.
Aeryn: I felt it too. It’s been a long time since I’ve clicked with someone so quickly like this.
{Soul nods affirmatively. He then looks slightly unsure of himself, as if trying to find the words to say.}
Soul: So, huh, Aeryn…
Aeryn (noticing his awkwardness): Yes?
Soul: …I was thinking… it would be a great idea if we formalized our relationship.
{For what seems an eternity, a pause hangs in the hallway. Soul is a bit deflated by his friend’s stunned expression. He moves to fill the silence only for Aeryn to finally reclaim her wits.}
Aeryn: Formalize… our relationship? Uh, which one would that be, exactly?
{Soul is even more bewildered by her response until he realizes how it could be construed. Flustered, he tries vainly to regain his composure.}
Soul: Uh… you know… our tag team! I thought we should perhaps get together… I mean, join forces in a permanent partnership… well, tandem may be the better word…
Aeryn: You mean become a regular tag team in MPW?
Soul: Yeah, exactly! We are extremely good together… in the ring, I mean… and I figured we could have quite a bit of success if we were steady… I mean, partnered together on a steady basis….
{As Soul fumbles awkwardly through his rationales, Aeryn struggles to keep a straight face. Inevitably, her resolve fails, causing her to unleash gales of laughter. Soul can only stand there flustered for a moments before himself falling victim to the hilarity of the situation. The two share a few giggles before finally regaining control. Wiping the joyful tears from her eyes, Aeryn walks up to Soul Shadow.}
Aeryn: Mr. Shadow, I accept your offer to become a tag team. After all…
{Aeryn leans closer, putting her lips right by his ear.}
Aeryn: …I think we would be great together too.
{Aeryn pulls back, looking at Soul Shadow with shining eyes. Her partner grins ecstatically at her response. Suddenly, several people rush by, including referees, security, EMTs, and MPW officials. They all stream through the backstage curtain into the arena, where an eruption of boos saturates the air. Both Soul and Aeryn share a concerned look before moving to follow the throng.}
Soul (as they part the curtain): What the hell…?
{Peering through, they watch as the EMTs attend the fallen members of the Resistance. The jubilant members of Iconic Aggression have been ushered away before they could inflict any further damage to the two bloodied bodies unconscious in the ring.}
Aeryn: Jesus..
Soul: The charming individuals we share our locker room with, hey?
Aeryn: Yeah...
{Aeryn looks back out of the curtains and watches as the EMT's roll Johnny Clash and Chrissy Starr out of the ring. Soul puts his hands on her shoulders, steering her away.}
Soul: Come on, let’s go. They'll be fine.
{As the turn away from the entrance they come face to face with Bob Herman's assistant, Jamie McKenzie.}
Jamie: Where do you two think you’re going?
{Aeryn and Soul give each other a slightly confused look.}
Soul: ...Home?
Jamie: Not yet, you’re not. Mr. Herman has an offer for the two of you, off the back of your match tonight. He would like to see you in his office to discuss it.
Aeryn: Right... great, we'll just go get changed and...
Jamie: No, now. Follow me please.
{They look at each other once more as Jamie begins to walk down the corridor.}
Soul: I guess we'd better follow her then....
{Soul motions his hand in front of him}
Soul: Ladies first...
{Three days later, Boston}
Aeryn: Come on, you can do better than that... more pressure, Soul. Put your back into it...
{In his Boston gym, Soul and Aeryn are going through their paces in the ring. Since hearing from Bob Hermann the news they were to be placed in a tag team title match, they have decided to throw themselves straight in to the preparations. In the corner of the ring, Aeryn stands on the apron while Soul applies pressure to the ankle of an unfortunate trainee, forcing him to struggle down on the mat.
Soul shoots a deadpan look over to the ringpost where Aeryn is leaning with her elbow on the turn-buckle and foot on the bottom rope, calling out instructions to her partner.}
Aeryn: What… I'm being helpful...
Soul: (smiling)... I have done this a time or two before you know...
Aeryn: ...Yeah, but ten years is a lot of time in between the two...
{She fixes him with a cheeky grin as he drops the trainee’s ankle and dismisses him from the ring. Feigning a hurt look he walks across the ring towards her.}
Soul: Can you please take this seriously?
Aeryn: We have been serious for the past three days!
Soul: We have a tag title shot on the line against Iconic Aggression! We have to be as ready as we can be.
{Aeryn steps through the ropes to join her partner in the ring, slowly she starts to pace around him in a circle.}
Aeryn: Soul. We have been through more drills than an Olympic wrestling team and we have double teamed more trainees than I care to remember. We are as in synch as we are ever going to get... Anyway…
{Aeryn points towards the door}
Aeryn: …you just dismissed the last guy left in this building to wrestle.
{Following Aeryn’s gaze he watches as the trainee disappears from sight.}
Soul: Huh... Well, I guess there's only one thing to do then...
{He takes a step towards Aeryn, making a grab for her as she instinctively locks up with him.}
Aeryn: OH, it’s like that now... Ok, old man, let’s see what you've got...
{Soul laughs as he starts to move her backward towards the turnbuckle, using his height and weight advantage to easily manoeuvre her smaller frame. Aeryn is aware of her positioning and upon reaching the corner starts to climb backward up the pads, her arms still locked with Soul. Reaching the top she drops back down beside him, quickly turning him into a side headlock while he is still off-balance. Soul places a hand in the small of her back and shoots her off into the ropes, catching her upon her return in a waistlock. She struggles, trying to release his grip around her waist, pushing down on his hands but finding it near impossible to break... the traditional way. She stops struggling, a wicked smirk playing on her lips as she tilts her head backward resting it on his shoulder.}
Aeryn: So you've got me where you want me...
{Glancing up, she can see the familiar red flush of embarrassment creeping across Soul’s features. Just what she was hoping for. She turns her head a little, letting her lips brush against his cheek as she speaks.}
Aeryn: ...What now?...
{Smiling to herself and used to Soul's fits of awkwardness, when she feels his hands loosen she fully expects him to let her go. It is only as she goes to step away she realizes Soul hasn't let her go at all, instead his hands now rest on her hips. The smile on her face softens as she becomes aware they are no longer just having fun. Just as Soul turns her to face him, they hear the sound of footsteps right outside the door.}
...: Hey dad. What are you doing?
{Soul’s son Hunter, carrying his school backpack, enters the room. He dumps it in the far corner and walks across to the ring.}
Aeryn (under her breath): ...Just getting in sync...
{She smirks as Soul cuts her a look before turning towards his son.}
Soul: Hey Hunter....
Hunter: Where's everyone else? I thought you were tag training today?
{Aeryn rolls out of the ring and walks around to grab herself a bottle of water as Soul jumps down to greet his son.}
Aeryn: Well, we were... but on account of us being so good we got through everyone just before you arrived. Uh... so, Shakira not with you Hunter? I would have thought she'd around here somewhere?
{Hunter and his father share a guilty glance.}
Soul: Umm, she's staying with her boyfriend this week. There are some… issues she felt needed to be worked out.
{Aeryn gives him a wary look.}
Aeryn: Right...
Hunter (brightly): Dad, did you and Aeryn decide on a team name yet?
{Soul sits down on a chair, taking a bottle of water from Aeryn as she walks over to join them.}
Soul: Not yet, no... We've been too focused on Iconic Aggression to come up with anything. Why, do you have any ideas for us?
Hunter: Well, we are studying Greek myths in class and it got me thinking. I know you have both had a lot of time off before returning to wrestling… starting your careers over again. So I thought about it and decided you should be called Phoenix.
Aeryn: I love it, but I think it needs a second part. We're not that well known yet to just have a one word name... We're not Cher...
Hunter: Who is Cher?
{Aeryn gives the kid a dirty look while Soul thinks for a few moments.}
Soul: I've got it! He's right. We are like a Phoenix, a Phoenix rising from the ashes as something new and reborn. What about Phoenix Rising?
Aeryn: Perfect. You like it Hunter?
{He nods.}
Soul: Phoenix Rising versus Iconic Aggression for the tag team titles. I really, really like the sound of that. Good job, son.
{Soul rustles his son’s hair a little bit, drawing a squeal of protest from the child. Aeryn smiles while watching the two horse around, but her smile soon fades as she becomes lost in thought. Soul notices the change in the mood.}
Soul: Aeryn, what’s wrong?
Aeryn: I'm still trying to get over what those two assholes did to Johnny and Chrissy. I have seen some violence in my time in this business, but what they did deserves an assault charge.
Soul (raising his eyebrow): Compared to what the Damned did to me?
Aeryn: That was certainly bad, but at least then they only assaulted you and no one else. Their attack on Chrissy was more about hurting Johnny than her.
{Hunter gives his dad a worried look at this line of conversation. Soul gives him a comforting smile before once again messing his hair.}
Soul: True, but that’s between IA and the Resistance. It’s not our job to take revenge on behalf of Johnny, Chrissy, or even Brandon or Roxi. They are more than capable of handling themselves on that score. Besides, despite what Crow and Impaler kept implying, I have zero interest in being the savior of MPW. My sole goal in coming here was to prove to myself against the best the wrestling world has to offer. Facing Trey and Jackson, especially with the belts on the line, is for the most part just another chance for me to do so.
Aeryn: I get that, Soul, for I came here for the same reasons as well. Winning the Roll the Dice briefcase…
{Soul smiles ironically, having been a loser in the same match.}
Aeryn: …was the first step in the journey. This title match is the next one. For both of us, this is our first chance at gold. I don’t intend to blow it against these two bastards. Still, I’ve known Johnny for a long while. We have a fair amount of history. I feel I owe it to him to get a little retaliation in this match for what happened last week.
Soul (nodding): I understand, Aeryn, and I’m in debt to the Resistance a little as well for their attempt to help me when the Damned trapped me in that freaking cage. But, truth is, just winning this match will give some measure of payback. You know their tagline?
Hunter: “We Bleed Gold”. They took it because after Uprising, they controlled all the belts in MPW.
Soul: Very good, kiddo. Thing is, they’ve been living that slogan beyond their wildest expectations lately. The TV title left their control when Lucas King, the forgotten member of their group, fell to Jason X and then ran from the arena like a scared kitten. Jackson was stripped of his Sin City title for lack of defenses during his self-imposed sabbatical, though he did eventually manage to reclaim it from Nytrus. And Trey quit the World Heavyweight title when Roxi made him tap out dead center of the ring. They haven’t been just bleeding gold; they’ve been damn well hemorrhaging it for the past two months. The Sin City and World Tag Team straps are all they have left.
Aeryn: I’m surprised they even remember they still have the belts. Do you realize Iconic Aggression has held the title for over five months, yet they have not defended it since the second week of their reign? That’s a bloody four and a half months with no defenses! I know they have also had singles titles to worry about, but their tag team championship run has been nothing but one big bloody joke.
Soul: Exactly. For much of their run, because they’ve been so preoccupied with their singles titles, they’ve treated the tag belts like nothing more than an accessory which upgrades their claims of greatness. Now, thanks to King’s vanishing act and Trey’s epic fail at Roll the Dice, it is virtually all they have left. Iconic Aggression is now a wounded animal struggling to hold onto the very last of its lifeblood before it becomes nothing more than a decomposing carcass. They took their pre-emptive strike against the Resistance because they see them as the only predators in MPW capable of finishing them off.
Aeryn (smiling): Which plays right into our hands. We’re still new to the federation, so no way are they taking us seriously. Hell, I’m sure they are coming into this match thinking this is just a tune-up for their future battles with Johnny and the rest. They are almost certain to overlook us, believing they are better than us simply because they’ve been around MPW longer. Yet there’s a reason we’ve gotten these shots. We’re just as talented as they are, if not more. And we’ve certainly proven ourselves to be a better representative of the tag team division in the past couple of weeks than they have in months.
Soul: You know it, Aeryn. So we are indeed going to get a little revenge for Johnny and Chrissy this weekend. We’re going to cut Iconic Aggression open, make them bleed some more, then clean up the tag team gold when we exit the ring.
Hunter: But, Dad, if you take the belts from them, won’t they come after you like they did with the Resistance?
Soul: Don't worry buddy, we'll be fine. The Resistance’s main mistake was in thinking Iconic Aggression would take time to lick their wounds. Aeryn and I have been around the block too many times to make that error. If Baxter, Blaze, and even their new bitch Laila try to get come after us, we’re going to teach them when you fight a phoenix…
Aeryn (winking at Hunter): …you’re going to get burned.
{Hunter relaxes a little from the new team’s words, though he still appears slightly apprehensive. Soul looks appreciatively at his partner, then leans down to talk to his son.}
Soul: I think we're about finished for today. How about we all go and get something to eat ?
Aeryn: Sounds good to me....
{Hunter nods enthusiastically as well. Both Aeryn and Soul put their arms around the boy as the trio heads for the door. As they exit, Soul hits the light, plunging the entire scene in darkness as the promo ends.}
{Immediately after the main event, Aeryn Ashfield and Soul Shadow have come into the backstage area. Both are filled with elation, having just scored a major victory over Soul’s rivals the Damned.
