(We open on an old porch, the paint peeling the wood starting to show signs of fatigue as fall leaves cover the surface of the porch as Impaler sits in an old wooden chair his feet propped up on one of the rails to the porch his mask in his hand as he stares at it.)
Impaler: People think when I speak of myself as a monster that I am considering myself as a bad man or that I am vicious or that I lack morality.
(As Impaler speaks he ignores the camera fixated on his mask almost talking to it rather than addressing the MPW people.)
Impaler: While these are all good guesses and they aren’t out of the realm of possibility the one thing I think of is the fact that no monster is born, no monster in the conventional sense is ever born a monster. In literature all monsters needed someone to think of the idea, create the monster. Let’s not forget history most of not all of the monsters we hold in regard as monsters are partial media creation and stories. Now that’s not to say that these people didn’t do something heinous, hell a man whom this country has stigmatized as a “monster” is Benedict Arnold, now don’t get me wrong the man is a traitor but a monster? Really, the man was a wrongfully court martialed and then crippled while serving the Colonial Armies the man could’ve been one of the greatest heroes in this Country’s history had he not been pushed just that one inch too far and then everyone forgets the sacrifices that the man made before that and they focus on his “NEW” reputation. Then you have my namesake, Vlad Dracul the third also and more commonly known as Vlad…The Impaler. To the members of the outside World he’s a monster due not only to his association with the concept of Vampires and no not those damn Twilight Abominations but the original core concept of what a Vampire is but also his monster like persona came from his actions. But the people of his own nation view the man as a hero a man who stood up for his country and did the right thing even if his methods were…extreme.
(Impaler brings his mask about three inches from his face and smiles as he stares into the dead blacked out eyes of the mask.)
Impaler: It’s two prong really, the moral to these stories not to cut the thought short but there are other things to address here too so I’ll cut to the chase. Most of our monsters are ninety to a hundred percent creation in one form or another. That and there’s a thin line between being a monster and a hero, one decision that could change the world for better or for worse. So how does this apply to the situation at hand, how does this make any sense in relation to Valentina Madison? Well this week Val learns the lessons learned by the Turks when they came knocking at Vlad’s door, you knock at the door and you may not like the answer. Like the steel workers union in Homestead when they struck and opposed the wishes of Henry Frick.
(Impaler removes his feet from the rail and sits up straighter continuing to look into the dead eyes of the mask before him almost as if looking for answers from it.)
Impaler: You see Ms. Madison, this is all about being what you are and yes, I am a monster, one that started sixteen years ago and was built bigger by every triumph, whose namesake grew with every championship, but what is most telling with every failure I was made the better for it. Valentina, we as people like to cling to our morals, we like to think that it is that that separates us from the typical animal. We have a sense of right and wrong, we have a sense what is good and decent. Why is it then that we all have a different view as to what that actually means? You are just another person, clouded by what you call morality, it’s a falsehood, a misnomer, what is moral and what is right is decided by how far a society is willing to restrain itself. Valentina, I do not restrain myself which is why I have had success in the face of my failures. This week Valentina you will be another notch in our record book, another could’ve been contender, another monster hunter…gone missing. The belief is that history will repeat itself to those who don’t heed its tales. The truth is history is always being written and the names and faces may change but inevitably the play of history never will.
(With that Impaler stand up and sets his mask on the rail in front of him and walks away having never once looked at or acknowledged the camera.)
