(Note: Apologies on the lateness... it was a rough weekend for a few reasons)
{The sun has begun to drop from the sky as this year’s New England Thanksgiving slips into late afternoon. At the home of MPW talent Soul Shadow, an excellent feast has been shared amongst friends and family. Now, with the turkey and side-dishes all consumed, the clean-up and after-dinner activities have begun.}
{In a large playroom set up in the basement area, Soul is watching his son Hunter and his client and rising WWO talent Wolf enjoying playing a tag team on the hot new X-Box release WWO 14. After witnessing yet another impressive victory by the pixelated team of Wolf and Matt Reece over the diabolical Avalon Britton and Justin Fischer, the tag champion climbs the stairs to the first floor. Once upstairs, he glances to the kitchen. His partner, both in wrestling and in love, Aeryn Ashfield is helping his mother clean up the dishes. The two ladies are chatting away, making Soul hope his mom isn’t sharing too many embarrassing stories about his childhood with her. His lover spies him standing in the entranceway and gives him a quick wave. Soul smiles, blowing a kiss in return. She blushes while returning to her task.}
{Soul turns away from the kitchen, heading into the living room. Sitting on a sofa before a roaring fireplace while attentively watching the Oakland – Dallas football game is Aeryn’s roommate Rue. In her hand is an empty Sam Adams White Christmas bottle. Soul tends to the fire for a moment, adding a couple of logs and rearranging things to keep it at a healthy blaze. Once complete, he looks at Rue’s empty bottle.}
Soul: Need a refill?
{Rue glances at him, shaking her head in the negative. Soul shrugs and joins her on the couch to watch the game.}
Soul: So how goes the game?
Rue: The Raiders looked to be making a game of it early, but they’ve now allowed Romo to get into a groove. Not too much of a surprise. Raiders are not that good a team and are on their third-choice quarterback while Tony’s Cowboys are lights out in November. Too bad for them, this is last game before their kryptonite of December arrives.
Soul (letting out a whistle): Looks like you have a wealth of football knowledge…
Rue: Surprised a girl can know something about the sport other than which ones’ asses looking the best in their uniforms?
Soul: Oh, everybody knows the answer to that one. Tom Brady, right?
{Rue gives her host an evil eye for a moment before her resolves breaks into a small chuckle. Soul smirks himself at her reaction.}
Rue (under her breath): Well, there’s that Boston charm she keep going on about…
Soul: Seriously, though, I didn’t mean to insult you. If you couldn’t tell from my working relationship with Aeryn, I’m not one of those guys who thinks women can’t master and compete in the same things guys traditionally are expected to excel at.
Rue: “Working relationship”? Considering you took her bags into YOUR room when we arrived, I think you have much more than that.
Soul (blushing slightly): Yeah, well, we obviously are closer than just what we do for MPW. My larger point was that our team is an equal partnership. By winning the Roll the Dice briefcase, she proved she is more than capable of handling herself against the big boys. Since we started teaming regularly, she went toe-to-toe with Trey Baxter, Jackson Blaze, Crow, Impaler, Jason X, Zero, and…
{Soul’s eyes cloud with rage as he tries to say the next name…}
Soul: …Christian Carter…
{Rue herself grimaces at the mention of the man who is alleged to have nearly killed her roommate this past Sunday by ramming a car into the dumpster where she and Valentina Madison were wrestling in a parking lot match.}
Soul: She’s not only held her own… she’s had great success in this male-dominated business. Our title is very much due to her contributions as much as it is mine. I respect and admire… and even love her… for that. She truly is one of a kind.
Rue (smiling): Yeah, she is. I remember when we ended up first meeting, while we were both looking for roommates. She struck me with her forceful personality and presence, always so strong and self-assured. Confidence just seemed to emanate from all her pores. Of all the potential people with whom I would share an apartment, I never imagined professional wrestler would be the one I would end up with. Always thought you guys were a little… well, I was thought there was something a little wrong with you guys. Uh, no offense.
Soul (waving off the comment): None taken.
Rue: Once I got to know her though, my opinion quickly changed. Aeryn is one of the most level-headed people I have ever met. She is also very fun-loving, becoming the life of the party without never really setting out to be it. Plus, she is an absolute sweetheart yet she always tended to hide that part of her from the world at large. At least she did until she started getting involved with you…
{Rue gives Soul a knowing look. He averts his eyes to the television, finding it difficult to meet her gaze. She smirks to herself at his reaction, not surprised with it given everything Aeryn had told her about their relationship.}
Rue: Anyway, it wasn’t long before she became more than my roommate. She became the best friend I ever had. Which is why I always worry about her when she leaves to go on her wrestling tours. I know she is strong. I know she is tough. But lately, especially since she hooked herself onto you, she’s be getting brutalized. And I keep wondering just how much long she can keep this up…
Soul: I know… First the injury from when we fought Iconic Aggression, which they almost made worst by attempting to assault her immediately afterwards. Now, thanks to that bastard Christian Carter almost killing her with his drunken driving…
Rue: So you know for sure it was Christian…
Soul: Who the fuck else would it be? He was stupid enough to think we were an easy target for himself to get some MPW gold and choose poor Valentina out of nowhere for his partner. When Aeryn and I beat his ass and kept him from hurting her more during the pay-per-view, he lost it even worse than he normally does. He came after me and Aeryn with a vengeance. Plus he aligned himself with Kurt Newman, a dangerous veteran in his own right.
Rue: I still find it hard to believe another wrestler would do something so… homicidal as to ram their dumpster…
Soul: Have you ever seen Carter? He’s buried himself in the bottom of an endless supply of alcohol bottles. His career is in complete shambles. And worse yet, he refuses to take responsibility for any of it. It’s never his fault. Someone else is always to blame for everything that goes wrong in his career and his life. As such, he always tries to escape the consequences of his actions.
{Soul turns his face towards Rue. She is slightly taken aback by the anger displayed by the normally calmer man.}
Soul: Well, this week, there is going to be no escape for that asshole. He may blame Herman for sticking him in a cage match against me, but this will be a hell of his own making. I fully intend to take my time with this. The pain, the hurt, the agony he caused… he’s going to get it back tenfold. For Aeryn. For me. And even for Valentina, whose he’s tormented since he first stepped foot in the federation. When I am finished, there won’t be enough alcohol on this planet… probably not even in the entire universe… to chase away the suffering he will be feeling after this one.
Rue: But isn’t this a tag match? You’ll have to contend with his partner as well.
Soul (nodding): Yeah, Kurt Newman, my opponent from last week. Funny, I thought he would underestimate me last week. Ironically, it turned out I underestimated him. Most MPW veterans seem to discount my experience simply because it wasn’t earned here and treat me like a rookie. He didn’t and because of that, he caught me by surprise. However, I won’t make that mistake again. This time, I know what he is about. I will be better prepared to take him on. Not that I’m his primary concern.
Rue: Really? Given he is thrown his hand with Carter, you figure he’d do everything possible to protect his partner.
Soul: True, but I have a partner as well. Roxi Johnson, the reigning World champion, the fighter for justice herself.
Rue: Wait, isn’t she that one running around with the superhero gimmick? I have to admit, I don’t quite get it…
Soul: Neither do I, to be honest. It seems a little weird for me for a grown person to be leaping from the rooftops stopping crime in the age of cellphones where we can call the cops and send them the video evidence of the felony. Amazingly, she is extremely effective at it. She is also the one who ended Trey’s long reign, which as I know from experience is no easy task. Much like Aeryn, she is a strong warrior who people take lightly at their peril.
{Soul looks back at the television while talking.}
Soul: Of course, Kurt as arrogant as he is, has decided to cross her and make a run for her title. Much like Chris Cable, I think he is going to find out just how foolhardy that can be. I have a feeling Newman is going to find himself a little too pre-occupied receiving everything he can handle from Roxi to worry about me. Actually, for him that might be blessing. The last thing he is going to want to be is in my way.
{Soul looks back at Rue.}
Soul: This match is all about revenge. Carter nearly took something away from me. Something I didn’t realize I wanted at first, but now that I have it, I intend never to let it go. Such an attack is not going to go unpunished. This Sunday, in Virginia, I end to kick Carter from one end of his alcoholic gutter to the other, repeat the process, and then leave his broken body in my wake. It will be his own personal rehab, for by the time I am done, he’ll have no bones left to be able to raise his bottle.
{Rue nods, hearing the fire in his voice. During his speech, she has come to realize what Aeryn admires and loves about him. Smiling, she finds herself glad the two have found each other. At that moment, Aeryn walks into the room, carrying some drinks. She hands one each to Soul and Rue, and then sits down in-between them. Soul slips his arm over her.}
Aeryn: Hey guys. My ears were burning for a few moments there. Were you talking about me?
Rue: He was. I couldn’t get him to stop talking, actually.
Aeryn: Oh, really? What was he talking about?
Rue: Basically saying how much he cares about you, Aeryn. You have a good man there, hun. I honestly think he’d do anything for you.
{Soul blushes at the compliment while Aeryn reaches her hand up, pulling his chin down towards him}
Aeryn: Yeah, don’t I know it.
{The two shares a kiss as Rue smiles in the background, returning her attention to the television. Aeryn and Soul soon focus their attention on it as well as the camera zooms out. The scene focuses on the three friends enjoying the post-Thanksgiving evening, then fades to black.}
