All I saw was the flash of red as the woman brushed by me. I knew in a heartbeat that she’d tried to steal from me but I was pretty handy when it came to pick pockets and I had her wrist before she could extract my wallet. She looked up at me with pretty blue eyes, surprised that I’d been quick enough to catch her.
“Go find some other chump.” I pried it from her fingers and gave her a gentle shove. She pouted a little but stood still watching me walk away. There was a reason why I always won. I didn’t let anyone get the upper hand, including that ass-wipe Will Turner.
Did I care that I had sent my resignation via email? No. Did I care that he offered me more money to stay? Maybe a little but it still wasn’t what Adams was giving me and the difference between Turner and Adams? God, for one I didn’t feel like I had to shower whenever I was in Adam’s presence. Turner was so slimy it made my skin crawl and then to find out that he was the jerk that had hurt Lexi….well…
I had no loyalties…to anyone. Not even my own family but I would still go to the ends of the earth for them. A blonde caught my attention. Her dress was a little to revealing and her makeup a little darker than I would have liked. I hated the tattoo on her forearm and knew it was only one of many that she had gotten over the last couple years, although I didn’t want to know where the others were. She smiled at the dealer.
“Hit me.” She said in a voice I had gotten used to hearing.
The Dealer put down a card. The woman’s face spread into a big smile showing all her perfect white teeth. Thousands of dollars in dentistry at its best. I finally made it to the table and took a seat beside her.
“Winning?”
She didn’t look up at me as she pulled in her winnings toward herself.
“You think?” She indicated the large pile that she’d already collected. “What about you?”
“Almost had my wallet stolen and I lost everything at the slots.”
She shook her head. “I told you that the Slots were a waste of time.”
“It’s just beginners luck for you.” I supplied. She gave me an annoyed look and then fingered a Gold bracelet on her wrist. I rolled my eyes. “Why are you wearing that?”
“It’s a nice bracelet, why shouldn’t I wear it…besides it’s better than the elastic.”
“That dude doesn’t even remember giving you that.”
She shrugged. “It was fun while it lasted.”
“Until you gave him a concussion that caused him to lose 65% of his short term memory.”
“I didn’t mean to hurt him that bad…”
I rolled my eyes. Bliss’ last boyfriend, also a wrestler, had been involved in some elaborate scheme to mess with my older brother Jeremy, in the process she’d been a little over zealous and hit him harder than she needed to. The result was that he forgot her and most of what had gone on in the 6 months prior. I had expected her to be angrier but she’d brushed it off as if it were nothing. I guess the feelings she thought she had for him weren’t as strong as she let on.
“You should sell that thing. It’s probably worth a small fortune.”
She shrugged and asked the dealer to hit her again.
“Bust.” The dealer said when she got a 9 on a 14.
“Think I’ll go and get something to eat…join me brother?” she said and batted her eyelashes at me.
I followed her to where they were setting up a lunch buffet.
“Thanks for telling me about this place by the way.” I said as we stood in line.
“Adams wanted to know if I knew people.”
“You told him about Lexi too didn’t you?”
She nodded. “Why not?” she put a cherry tomato in her mouth, “she’s a good wrestler…” her mouth was full but I still managed to make out what she was trying to say.
“It doesn’t matter to me…” I lied.
She laughed. “Sure it doesn’t.” She put assorted lunch meats on her plate and continued to talk. “You’ve only been obsessed with her since you were a kid…”
“Shut up okay. She’s with Drake….and that ass-munch came with her.”
Bliss started to laugh. “And your first match is against him too…”
“What?!” They’d posted the first card? What the hell?
“Oh yeah, don’t you pay attention to the site? Geez, I’m not going to be your secretary, I have my own things going on.”
I took out my phone and looked it up. Sure enough, my first match was against Drake and Lexi was a guest referee.
“Shit.”
Bliss was laughing again. We’d made it to the end of the line. She paid for her plate and I realized that I hadn’t even made one up for myself. It didn’t matter; I had suddenly lost my appetite anyway.
“Well isn’t that going to be interesting.” We found a table and I sit across from her. “You really think she’ll be fair and let you get away with shit?” She’s munching now on carrot sticks. I had to wonder with how much Bliss ate how she stayed so fit.
“We’ve started to mend things…I can only imagine how hard this is going to be for her.”
“Oh give me a break.” She rolls her eyes. “She’s not going to leave Drake, especially for you. Didn’t she tell you as much when she levelled you a few weeks ago?”
I hated when Blissy was right. She had told me that there was a snowball’s chance in hell of getting back together with me.
“I still want to be her friend.” It was imperative if my plans were to continue here at MPW for her to trust me again.
“So what? Are you going to play at being ‘good’ for the match so that she’ll think you’re ‘good’? And you got on my case for keeping a thousand dollar bracelet form an ex. At least my baggage is light and easily hidden.” She used quote fingers on the good. I hated quote fingers.
“You talk too much.” I stood.
“Oh go shove it up your ass Justin. Your so two faced it’s a wonder you don’t have a split personality.”
“I think I’ve had enough of your childish immature reasonings.” I started to walk away, not wanting to get into a full blown argument with her. I can hear her laughing after me. Not many things I said actually made Bliss angry. She had a pretty good control but she did have triggers and I avoided them. No one wanted to see a fist fight between the two most volatile Fischer kids, is it any wonder we ended up in wrestling?
I had to wonder why I had tracked her down to the casino anyway…I knew that she was probably going to end up making me mad, she usually did.
Fuck me. A match with Drake. I didn’t exactly expect that so quickly…and the clincher was that Lexi was going to be the deciding factor. Damn. I wanted to beat him and I wanted to make him feel pain, especially the pain that came with receiving a cruise Control, however how was I ever going to get Lexi to trust me if I beat him up so ruthlessly. I supposed the only way to find out was to actually talk to Lexi.
Pulling out my phone again and I texted her. Lunch would sway her out…as long as she could get away from that psycho for a couple hours. She responded quickly and agreed to meet me.
She arrived 35 minutes later, beautiful as ever, wearing a white sundress that I assumed to be new.
“I didn’t know how hot it was here.” She said taking the seat in front of me. “I guess I’ll get used to it.” She gave me a smile and I couldn’t help but smile back.
“It’s a dry heat; we’re used to humid heat.”
She nodded. “So what’s good here?”
“Shrimp.” Her eyes went wide. Most people didn’t know that Shrimp was Lexi’s hidden pleasure. Everyone in her family was allergic except her so she only ever got it when she wasn’t going to be home for a while because even the smell of it on her would cause little Matty to break out in hives. She opened her menu and her jaw dropped.
“Justin...this is way too expensive….”
“Don’t worry about it. I asked you out remember?”
“But I…”
“Shush. How often do you get Shrimp? Order some and enjoy it.”
She rolled her eyes and when the waitress came by she ordered a platter and a beer. I did the same.
“When did you get in?” I asked.
“Yesterday. I haven’t really left my condo until today. It’s been too hot.” She smirked and I knew the real reason. I didn’t want to know the real reason though and I controlled my anger. I don’t know why the thought of two people who were supposed to be in love sharing the day together angered me so. Maybe it was because I felt like Lexi should be mine…
“Did you see the first card?”
She frowned. “Yes.”
“And?”
“Is that why you wanted me to come out with you Justin? You wanted to see if I would be fair?”
“I know you’ll be fair Lexi.”
“Then what? You don’t know how hard this going to be for me. I love you both and …”
“and?”
“I know you cheat.”
I shrugged. It wasn’t a secret; it was part of who I was.
“If you cheat on Monday I’ll be forced to disqualify you Justin.”
“Normally I’d take out the ref before I’d cheat so I won’t get a DQ.”The waitress brought our beers. I thanked her and took a swig.
“So does that mean your going to take me out so that you get a chance to use a chair or something on Drake?”
“No. I can’t take you out…no matter how much I hate your boyfriend Lexi, I won’t hurt you.” It was a part lie. I wouldn’t hurt her on Monday but I couldn’t guarantee that she wouldn’t get hurt in the future.
“So I don’t understand what you’re trying to say…”
“I’m saying that for once in my life I will play fair in that match so Drake better have his A-Game on.”
“He always does.”
“And I’m not going to take it easy on him…”
“I don’t expect you too….Justin…he still doesn’t trust you. He was very leery about me going out to lunch with you today…”
“He shouldn’t trust me. No one should.”
“So I shouldn’t trust you?” her eyebrows went up in question.
“With what you know about me? No, but I know you will anyway…because that’s just the kind of person you are Lexi. You try and play up these episodes where you pretend to be a badass but I know your heart. You couldn’t hurt someone intentionally…”
“I could depending on the circumstances…”
“Very true. Now let’s just enjoy lunch.” I smiled at her and she smiled back. Everything was falling into place so neatly that I was shocked. My ‘partner’ had been right about how gullible she would be after I simply apologised and then continued to be honest after, I really should have recruited this guy sooner.
